Telling Your Stepchildren About Your First Pregnancy

Posted by admin in Kids

Congratulations you’re going to be a mother! You have all of the emotions from excitment to anxiety to confusion of a first time expectant mom. You have one thing that many first time expectant moms don’t have: a stepchild.

You are a member of the growing group of expectant moms who are a part of a blended or stepfamily. You are faced with the unique challenge of having your first baby with a husband who has a child or children from a previous relationship.

Regardless of your relationship with your stepchildren, they may experience jealousy or insecurity that daddy is having another baby.

Dad should assure the children that his heart is big enough to love all of his children and that no one will take their place in his eyes.

Now it’s your turn to talk to your stepchildren. What should you say? Consider the following:

Never offer assurance by saying things won’t change after the baby is born. A baby brings changes in life. You probably won’t feel like hosting your stepchild’s slumber party after staying up the previous night with your crying newborn.

Do offer assurance by saying that even though you will have to eliminate some of your activities during pregnancy and after the baby arrives, your stepchild will always have a place in your heart.

Never offer assurance by saying you will love your newborn the same as your stepchild. Even if you believe this is true at the time you announce your pregnancy, don’t say it. Why?

As the months progress, you will be taken by surprise at the intensity of love you feel for the growing baby inside of you. Seeing the first ultrasound and feeling the first movements create a bond that develops long before your baby is born. A stepmom usually does not have the opportunity to develop a bond with her stepchild before birth.

The bond of a first time expectant mom can be so great with her developing baby that if she is a stepmom, she often wishes her husband was sharing the experience as a first time dad as well.

Do offer assurance by reaffirming your love or by reaffirming the special place your stepchild has in your heart. Remind your stepchild that the new baby will be a part of him or her.

Being a stepmom expecting her first baby is no easy feat. In addition to the unsettling emotions pregnancy hormones bring, you have the challenges of a blended or stepfamily.

Take time to relax, pamper yourself and talk about your feelings with those you trust. Cherish each day you grow closer to meeting the little one you’re carrying. Before you know it one day when you hold your baby, you’ll know why mothers refer to their little ones as “the hearts outside of their bodies.”

Cynthia Wilson James is a childbirth educator, author, a midlife mom of two bubbly toddlers and a stepmom. She gave birth at age 42 to her first child and a second child at age 44. You can reach her at her website http://www.inseasonmom.org

What Am I Going To Do With The Rest Of My Life?

Posted by admin in This & That

Unexpected life changes. Anticipated transitions. Long, sleepless nights. What do these three things have in common? The ability to provoke one of the most haunting questions in the library of human introspectives:

“What on earth am I going to do with the rest of my life?”

While I can’t pretend to answer to this question for anyone other than myself, I can offer those in this position some basic tips on how to ensure that their future turns out as bright as their class valedictorian said it would be.

Take Time To Create A Map

Too often, when faced with a major (or even not so major) life decision, we tend to either take the first decent choice that presents itself or we allow circumstances to choose for us by default - putting off the decision until the inexorable current of life sweeps us past the turning point. As you can imagine, this is not the best way to get what you want out of life. But the options we are faced with in life can be so wildly divergent, or so deceptively similar, that it is difficult to know which turning to take. Wouldn’t it be great if we had some kind of road map that would help us know which paths to follow and which to pass by?

Below are five questions that everybody should ask himself or herself before starting out on any new path. The answers to these questions should then be used to guide decisions and to direct actions - when a choice comes up, simply compare the various options with your stated desires and choose the option that takes you closer to (or at least moves you the least farthest away from) your destination - your stated goals and desires.

1. What does success mean to me?

Be very specific. “I want to be rich,” is not an answer - just what does “rich” mean, anyway? Are you thinking of a set number? And if so, why? Or is the term “rich” a substitute for certain freedoms and opportunities that you view as coming only with money - and by limiting them to being accessed only through money, are you missing out on other alternative pathways?

Some more specific alternatives to “I want to be rich,” depending on the individual, might be: “I want to have enough net income to meet my current financial responsibilities without strain, plus have time and money left over for travel,” or “I want to be able to comfortably afford a jet-setting lifestyle in New York City,” or “I want to spend 4 days a week at home with my kids,” etc.

You should try to come up with at least three answers to the question of what success really means to you personally, with each one reflecting a different facet of what you feel makes up a truly successful life. And keep the money issue to just one statement - after all, such things as personal fulfillment, spiritual meaning and other essential needs and values cannot be solved, acquired or even influenced by money

One of the biggest obstacles to success is that most of us have never consciously explored what that means to us, aside from some vague and nebulous idea of fame, fortune or other worldly success. Knowing what success really means to you - what you hope or imagine that these generic definitions of success would actually provide and how you want those things to physically look like in your life - allows you to weigh your choices more accurately.

2. What are my non-negotiable needs?

List all the things that you envision as inescapable parameters of a successful and enjoyable life. Family, travel, no debt, pleasant work environment, social status, contributions to society, spiritual involvement, public acclaim, love, excitement, comfort - any or all of these, and any others you can think of are legitimate needs that when not met create an environment of stress, want and disempowerment in your life. Knowing what you are not willing to do without makes the relative values of different options clearer.

3. What are my non-negotiable boundaries?

List all the things that you absolutely do not want present in your life. If the idea of working in a standard hierarchical office environment makes you ill, put that down. If you can’t stand the thought of living in a cold climate, add that to the list. If being poked fun at about your physical condition or other attributes makes life unlivable, note that as well. By knowing what you will not tolerate, many choices become much easier to make. Plus, it allows you to set down rules and policies about who and what you will invite into your life and the standards of behavior you will, and will not, tolerate.

4. What are my key values?

Spend some time searching your soul to come up with a list of your basic values, creating a life around which would make you the person you want to be and allow you to live the life you want to live. Are you the type who values honesty, clean/green living and a deep love of nature above all things? Or are you more of a ‘comforts of home’, family and fun kind of person? Do you value charity over letting others find their way on their own, or is it the other way around? Knowing what you truly stand for is a vital component of good decision-making.

5. What do I want to be remembered for?

What legacy do you want to leave here when you pass on? What do you want people to say about your life and you as a person? What do you want to be known for? What would you like your obituary to say about you? Knowing where you want to end up makes choosing the path to get there, and keeping track of your progress, infinitely easier.

Key Points To Consider

There are three key points to keep in mind when you are faced with making life-changing decisions.

1. Look before you leap.

In life, as in commercial marketing, “Buy now before this opportunity is gone!” is almost always code-speak for, “Buy now, before you have time to read the fine print.” True, from time to time real, honest-to-goodness, amazing, once-in-a-lifetime offers do come around. But if you have laid down a foundation of well-considered choices and clear-minded focus before this happens, you will have the presence of mind and strength of purpose to know when to jump and when to pass, and be much more capable of telling the difference between a missed opportunity and a close call.

2. Life is no longer a “one chance per person” event.

The times, they are definitely a’changing, and one of the best things to come out of that change is that we now understand that people change as well and that not only is this normal, it is to be expected. The career or life that suited you perfectly in your 20’s will most likely not fit the middle-aged you, no more than the same wardrobe or lifestyle would. Sometimes this is merely the result of the normal process of personal evolution we all go through as we age and mature, and sometimes it comes about suddenly in response to reality-shifting events and life-changing transitions such as living through a traumatic event, losing a job or getting married.

However change comes, be prepared to go with the flow. Don’t worry about “all that time I spent in grad school,” or what your friends and family will say. In the first instance, there is no such thing as “sunk costs” in life - 90% of nearly any education or life experience is 100% transferable to new situations and new outlets. In sports they call it “cross-training,” and an athlete doesn’t consider his or her training complete without in. In the second instance, well, if they love you they will want you to be happy and if they don’t love you, then who cares what they think? Besides, they’re not the ones who have to live this life - you are.

Also falling under this heading is the admonition not to trade a good life now for some nebulous “better tomorrow,” such as spending your life zombie-ing through a career you hate for the promise of a pensioned retirement. All too often, these “tomorrows,” if they ever do come, are no better than the “nows” you wasted. And as often as not the stress of living an unhappy life permanently cripples or even kills people, physically or otherwise, well before they can get to their imagined golden “tomorrow.”

3. Trying to find your “one, true purpose” is a waste of life.

We are all put here on this earth for any number of reasons - some big, some small and most of which we will never understand or even realize we’ve participated in until well after they’ve become distant memory. Spending too much time trying to scry your “true purpose” in the tea leaves of life can take your attention and energy away from creating the kind of life that would actually support the accomplishment these purposes in the first place.

A far better is alternative to create what I call a “Groundhog Day-Proof Life.” Based on the Bill Murray movie in which his character has to live the same day over and over, this concept involves creating a life that reflects your values, offers you opportunities to challenge yourself and is fulfilling enough and just plain pleasant enough so that if by some strange cosmic fluke you became trapped in any given day of your life, it would be a good thing rather than a tragedy. Living this sort of life virtually ensures that you will be who and wherer you need to be to fulfill any purpose you may have been sent here to accomplish, while at the same time providing you with a wonderful and rewarding “rest of your life” in the process.

Summary

Getting the most out of life isn’t about living “right”. It’s about living well. Learning to consciously steer your life in the direction you want to take it, making the choice to live by your own set of values and desires and making sure that you get the most out of the limited days you are given to work with ensures that when the time comes for your life to pass before your eyes in review, the show will definitely be worth the price of the admission.

Look Out; Space Junk 10 O Clock

Posted by admin in Video World

The future of Space is now upon us as the fledgling space industry gets started. But are humans being smart about what is out there? You see, we have one hell of a lot of Space Junk floating around out there and it is moving very fast as it orbits the Planet.

We must design Space Junk Collectors, which can clean up this mess and protect our space tourists, space workers and astronauts from potentially fatal accidents from space debris. A few ideas have been floated around in an online think tank to redesign system such as a Whipple Shield to use in the collection of space debris.

http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?showtopic=1301

http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?showtopic=579

http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?showtopic=1719

http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php…ter&f=203&t=144

If we had a Space collection unit and abstractly lets envision a giant robo vacuum like a Romba Robo-vac by iRobot Corporation in space then we could collect each piece of space debris. Of course there is a lot of space out there in volume and distance to travel between space debris pieces. So we may need to use a US Navy AUV search and destroy underwater sea mines scenario to do it right and that would mean many such units working together in a 3D Space Grid sequence pattern. These space robotic vacuums would need to be launched together and split off to their independent but reciprocal or parallel orbits together it seems?

A program could be designed with fuzzy borders of area operations in each grid, with a master program with artificial intelligence decision matrix software for the robotic-space-vacuum teams, this way they self assign which pieces to pick up in the most efficient pattern and also steer around satellites or equipment orbiting if that potential eventuality ever becomes necessary. This could be run autonomously trusting the devices to work as a team or by taking instructions from a ground control telemetry computer and feeding exact tiny burn times and corrections back to each unit net-centrically. The collision avoidance systems will be the exact opposite of the collection rendezvous interception software program to collect space debris.

During the collection each robotic space vacuum with indeed fly a somewhat zig-zag pattern like a Bat does when it eats 1000 bugs per hour, very efficient, lining up space debris in advance with the most direct path and working together as a team. Remember that it is best to stay on course with little deviations and trajectory changes to conserve fuel, while still accomplishing the job of cleaning up the collection grid area.

Each piece of space debris will need to be removed from the Whipple Shield collector and a robotic arm would put it into a canister behind the vacuum. Abstractly this is the vacuum bag on a household vacuum cleaner. Since there are various sizes of space junk and not all that is collected is needed and some is not metallic or rather magnetic in nature and thus not all can be collected using magnetic attraction alone. We should consider this in 2006.

Developing Those Elusive Bright Eyes… With Vitamins and Minerals

Posted by admin in University of Nutrition

Vision is one of our most precious senses. Without it the world as we know it would be blank. One of the things that we can do daily to protect our eyes from harm is to be sure that each day we consume the recommended daily intake levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that we need in order to keep our eyes healthy. As with everything about our bodies proper nutrition plays an invaluable role in keeping our eyes functioning as well as possible. There are certain nutrients that are known to be especially associated with ocular health.

Among these are the antioxidant vitamins. The eye, especially the lens and the retina is particularly vulnerable to the effects of unchecked free radicals which are a byproduct of oxygen, cellular processes and environmental contaminants. Antioxidant vitamins help to combat free radicals. The primary antioxidant vitamins include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. in addition to their important action against free radicals they promote healthy cells and tissues in the eye. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two more valuable antioxidants that recent research has found to be especially effective in maintaining the good health of the eyes.

In addition to the vitamins that promote ocular health there are several minerals that have been determined to play a significant role in the good health of the eye. Among these are zinc, selenium, manganese and copper. Zinc is an important mineral that serves to regulate sight, smell and taste and the concentration of zinc in the eye is actually higher than any other part of the body. One important function of zinc in relation to the eyes is its role in the regulation of the amount of Vitamin A which is essential to good eye health from the liver. People who have a deficiency in selenium have been clinically shown to be more likely to suffer from cataracts.

Recent research into the influence of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients upon the health of the eye has turned up a good deal of new information. This has led to the development of specialized dietary supplements designed specifically to promote ocular health. The early results of clinical trials concerning the disturbance and even reversal of macular degeneration and other age-related eye diseases via specialized nutritional treatments look very promising and research continues to prove it in a rapid pace..

Those seeking to benefit from dietary supplements designed to promote ocular health and healing should familiarize themselves with the most common vitamins and minerals in these supplements doing the research to find out what both would be the best and the safest levels of these nutrients are. Consulting an eye care professional and a licensed nutritionist can be very helpful in planning the best dietary supplement regimen suited to your individual dietary needs and health goals.

Making sure that you are achieving the recommended daily intake levels of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients is one of the best things that you can do for your overall health and well being. In terms of eye health, paying very close attention to your daily nutrition intake can actually make a real difference in the quality of your vision and help to keep your eyes healthy and functioning well for a very long time. When properly taken dietary supplements can be a valuable part of any ocular health focused program.

Making Sure You Win At Blackjack

Posted by admin in Gambling Fortunes

Learn how to ensure that you win - and not lose - when you play blackjack.

When you want to make sure you win in poker tables, not only should you play for luck, you should practice and practice your poker face and poker skills as well. Hard work, isn’t it? On the other hand, while other forms of gambling such as the roulette or the slot machine do not require you to exert much mental effort when it comes to playing, they offer you lesser chances of winning.

Hence, if you don’t want to prevent yourself from losing money when gambling, the best option is to play blackjack.

If you haven’t ever played blackjack yet, the rules are similar to playing Lucky 9. In Lucky 9, your cards must reach 9 or the value nearest to it. Any cards beyond 9 are busted and players with cards totaling more than 9 must declare this round a loss. The same thing applies to blackjack but this time, you should aim for 21 instead of 9. While in Lucky 9, you’re only allowed to draw up to three cards, in blackjack, you can draw up to a whopping five cards.

Tips to Win at Blackjack

Now that we’ve refreshed your memory on how to play blackjack, let’s proceed to tips that will help you win big at blackjack.

Soft and Hard Hands

If you’re still unfamiliar with blackjack lingo, understand that a soft hand is the term used to describe cards that contain an ace and a number card such as a six and then using the ace as eleven to reach a total amount of 17. On the other hand, a hard hand would compromise cards that do not contain any aces or cards that have an ace but don’t give it an equivalent value of eleven.

Some people say that it’s always better to have a hard hand rather than a soft one.

Choosing Tables

Yes, the right table can have a good effect on your success rate in blackjack so choose carefully. First and foremost, make sure that the minimum allowed bet is not more than five percent of your total chips. Get to know rules variation for each table because these can affect your chances as well, no matter how slight.

Insurance

And lastly, try to avoid taking insurance at all costs or at least only when it’s your last resort. No matter how friendly he seems, dealer can be your worst enemy in blackjack. So taking insurance can be betting for your nemesis and sometimes against yourself..

Everything clear now? That’s good. Start gambling and winning some of that money then.

Try , or Try not…

Posted by admin in The Helping Hand

Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try. There is definitely a
try, even if it doesn’t lead to a do. And this separates winners
from losers more surely than anything else. Trying does not, in
and of itself, lead to success, of course. Depending on the
goal, there are many ways to fail. But not trying surely leads
to failure. I was thinking about John Stockton, the recently
retired Utah Jazz basketball player who typified “trying”. He
had a lot of talent, of course, so his trying led to success,
but he will always be noted for his effort rather than his
talent. In thinking about John and giving full effort, I
wondered “why doesn’t everyone always try”? There is effort
involved in trying; an investment of resources, if you will, and
so one could argue that not trying when you know you will fail
is prudent. But I don’t think that’s it. Not trying is not a
calculated decision, it is emotional. People just don’t like to
fail. If you don’t try, you can always reassure yourself with
the false comfort that you would have succeeded, if only you had
tried. Once you try and fail, that’s it. Actually there is a
gradient all the way from not trying to giving 100% effort.
Sometimes people do something in a half-hearted way, and
possibly this is their form of “not trying”; they can feel they
would have succeeded if they had given full effort, and thereby
feel less bad about themselves for having failed. As I’ve noted
before, I believe happiness comes from liking yourself. Things
which make you feel better about yourself are “fun”, and things
which make you feel worse about yourself are not. Trying to do
something you are not good at may not be fun, in the sense that
you will feel worse about yourself for your lack of skill or
success. This accounts for the wide range of things people do to
have “fun”; different people are skilled at different things.
Certainly you don’t have to feel worse about yourself for not
trying or doing all of these things. That is the “out”; if you
don’t try, you won’t fail. But… That’s fine for discretionary
recreational activities. But what about life itself? What about
your family? Your profession? Your contribution to the world? In
these things not trying is the surest way to fail. You may be
able to convince yourself that your lack of success is due to
lack of effort, not lack of skill, but that is secondary; your
lack of success will be a fact either way. The key seems to be
to regard trying itself as a success. Yoda himself understood
this, for he said: Learn to lose as well as win, a Jedi must. If
you can feel good about yourself for your effort - regardless of
the results - then you can always succeed.

So you want to save valuable time traveling to the gym by building your own
home gym. Do to the long hours worked, and strenuous commutes,
more and more people are opting to squeeze there workouts in by exercising
in the comfort of their own homes.

There are many advantages to creating your very own home gym. It is shown
that people who have home gym equipment in their homes tend to exercise
more often. Let’s also not forget about saving valuable time, and money on monthly
health club dues. It seems like all the new estates being built in Los Angeles plan
for a room to be used for their own, personal home gym.

The only drawbacks to owning a home gym are its overwhelming cost, and space
limitations. But wait, maybe not! Sure you can purchase individual station
machines, a treadmill, a bike, and dozens of free weights. However, is that
really needed to get outstanding results? Do you have to spend $10,000 plus to
get yourself a home gym that really delivers results? The answer is absolutely not!

Yes, you can treat yourself to state of the art equipment, but will you get better
results than a gym which costs less than $100? The answer is no!

Being an Exercise Physiologist in Beverly Hills, California, and author of
Home Gym Shopping Secrets, I have proved you can achieve outstanding results
using a home gym which costs less than $100. I see that proof each and every day while
consulting with motivated clients throughout Los Angeles, California.

What I see daily is people not having the space for many pieces of home gym
equipment, or not willing to make a big investment.

Listed below is one of many home gym solutions I mention in Home Gym
Shopping Secrets. http://www.HomeGymShoppingSecrets.com/

The $100 Home Gym Solution

Dave, an Oscar winning screenwriter whom I consult with, uses his $100 home gym
twice per week, and gets amazing results. As a matter of fact, he pays me much
more each week for my services than he did for his complete home gym. His strength and
endurance has tripled over the past year, all while losing 6% body fat. This has all been
accomplished using his $100, cost effective, space saving home gym. As a matter of fact, we exercise
outside, year round, in his driveway! His home gym is comprised of the following
equipment which I have listed below. If your goals and medical history are compatible with this
type of program, you too can do something similar. Please refer to Home Gym
Shopping Secrets and Wellness WORD Multimedia Newsletter for additional fitness
programming information.

**LIST OF EQUIPMENT**

1 Large Swiss Ball
Stretching Mat
Pair of 15 pound dumbells
Pair of 20 pound dumbells
1 Heavy Black Ther-A-Band
1 Resistance Band With Handles
10 Pound Medicine Ball

That is it; simple as that! Now what you do with all this equipment is specific to
your medical history, and personal, primary goals. For more information on individual
fitness programming, please visit Wellness Word Newsletter, and Home
Gym Shopping Secrets.

The program Dave uses is more of a core strengthening regimen using
various functional movements. We even have him doing in the neighborhood
of 250 pushups throughout his circuit training routine. Just remember, programs
are created on an individual basis, and are not so called canned as one routine fits all.
The two resources I have mentioned above will help you get started on creating the
your proper program.

So the next time you think you can’t afford a home gym, think again. YOU CAN!

Paired Programming

Posted by admin in Software For Life

I have been hearing a lot about paired programming recently. I’ve done some research on the net about this to find out what exactly “paired programming” involves.

First off, here’s one of the better descriptions of Paired or Collaborative Programming from Wikipedia:

Description:

“Pair programming requires two software engineers to participate in a combined development effort at one workstation.

Each member performs the action the other is not currently doing: While one types in unit tests the other thinks about the class that will satisfy the test, for example.

The person that is doing the typing is known as the driver while the person that is guiding is known as the navigator. It is often suggested for the two partners to switch roles at least every half-hour.”

Pros/Cons

That are people for and against the idea for different reasons. The supporters of the idea argue that the paired programming
- increases software quality for various reasons.
- increases morale and team work
- speeds up the software delivery
- improves hands-on training of the junior programmers
- and spreads the code knowledge reducing the dependency on a single person for an area of the code.

Other people object that
- some people are more productive when they work on their own
- senior people may find it frustrating work with people who are still coming up to speed. Also, the new people may find it frustrating if the senior people have a tendency to take over the whole programming process.
- different people have different coding styles and there may be potential conflicts.

I have found that the biggest objection to this idea is the lack of scientific research into comparing the productivity/quality of paired programming and the traditional approach.

I must admit over 11 years of my programming, personally, I have produced better results when programming with another person. My second ever professional project never had any bugs from the testers or the field and I was working very closely with another programmer. Can it be a coincidence? Maybe I am more suited to working other people.

Future
Especially due to the following reasons, I see a lot of potential for the collaborative programming in the upcoming years:
- A very significant amount of software programming in the USA, UK and other countries have been outsourced to India, China, Russia and similar countries. One of the biggest challenges that have been well publicised is for the Western companies training up the outsourced partners and having enough control over the software that is being produced.
- Broadband technology has had a giant leap within the last few years. The analysts predict that the dial-up technology will be history very soon.
- Google is now trying to by-pass the whole dependency, created by Microsoft in the 80s, so that everything can be done over the internet without having to need anything but a browser.

So, the way I see it is that the paired programming can be and will used to have tighter relationships with the outsourced partners in the upcoming years.

The Contemporary Records Story

Posted by admin in Top Entertainment

Artist: Various
Title: The Contemporary Records Story (4 CD Set) Genre: Jazz
Label: Contemporary Records-http://www.fantasyjazz.com

Lester Koenig’s independent (yes there was indie music back in the 50s) Contemporary Records label was home to some of the brightest stars in jazz from 1952-1977. The roster was immense and very impressive. Luminaries such as Shelly Manne, Hampton Hawes, Victor Feldman, Art Pepper, and Ray Brown called the label home for many productive and wonderful years. To be sure, this label helped to shape jazz into what it is today.

The Contemporary Records Story is a handsomely bound book and placeholder for four amazing and eclectic CDs, including pictures of the album covers from where the tracks originally came from. What I enjoyed the most about this comprehensive set, was the mixture of different styles and ranges each featured artist had at their disposal. Koenig was able to bring out the best in this adventurous group of individuals.

Any jazz lover would treasure this collection as I do. Nearly every style of jazz you can imagine gets coverage within the 57 tracks found on this set. I listened several times with great joy to this music. Some box sets can become predictable and mundane by the time you spin the third disc, this is not the case here at all. There is something new and interesting to discover on every CD. This boxed set would be a great starter for those that want to learn more about jazz and the different styles within the genus, and not a bad stocking stuffer either for you late Christmas shoppers.
